Born in Hutchinson, Kansas Kristen Garlow Piper graduated in 1976 from the University of Kansas and the William Allen White School of Journalism with a degree in Photojournalism. She worked for newspapers and in advertising on both coasts and in-between before going into freelance work in the 1980’s.
Kristen is currently back in Kansas where in addition to her freelance work she specializes in photographing architectural restorations from start to finish.
Those projects include the Wiley Building, the art deco Catalyst Lofts and most recently the Hutchinson Art Center. She also documented the restoration of another historic Hutchinson icon - Fox Theater's vertical marquee.
Garlow Piper has twice been an Artist-In-Residence at Lester Raymer's Red Barn Studio in Lindsborg, Kansas. She is a contributing photographer for Hutchinson Magazine, The Hutchinson News and Lawrence-based Sunflower Publishing's Kansas Magazine. She also shoots for Hutchinson's local theater group Stage9, the Hutchinson Symphony Orchestra and the Cosmosphere Space Museum.
